What it’s like

Established in 1860, Howell’s School occupies a commanding 11-acre site in the cathedral village of Llandaff, a suburb of Cardiff. The splendid mid-Victorian Gothic building has been enlarged and adapted; facilities now include a Great Hall, drama studio, recording studios, technology centre, indoor swimming pool, sports complex and 5 ICT suites. There is a sixth-form centre with ample facilities for study, leisure and teaching. The junior school is currently being expanded to accommodate more pupils. Pastoral care is well-structured, through the tutorial and house systems. Academic standards are high and examination results very good. It is very strong in music and drama. There is a wide range of games and sports in which high standards are achieved, with national and county representatives in many of them. Extra-curricular activities are encouraged. There are work experience and work shadowing programmes, in the UK, France and Germany.
